Power Supply Efficiency in Active Mode: "Power supplies are one of the crucial building blocks of a modern society, converting high-voltage alternating current (AC) into low-voltage direct current (DC) for use by the electronic circuits in office equipment, telecommunications, and consumer electronics. Over 2.5 billion AC/DC power supplies are currently in use in the United States alone. About 6 to 10 billion are in use worldwide.
While the best power supplies are more than 90% efficient, some are only 20 to 40% efficient, wasting the majority of the electricity that passes through them. As a result, today's power supplies consume at least 2% of all U.S. electricity production. More efficient power supply designs could cut that usage in half, saving nearly $3 billion and about 24 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year."

PC Sympathy - VX2.betterinternet and Bundleware Infestations on the Rise: "Over the past month, I have seen an increase in infestations by a group called Bundleware.com which with the signature of Ad-aware calling it VX2.BetterInternet objects. Until last night, I believed it was wrong to label Bundelware with the VX2 Transponder signature as their methods were different from what I could see. Not so now however!

After running tests on one of their programs called SpyBan from SpyBan.net I now see why so much of the Better Internet Win32 BI Application and Bi Transponder variants show up with object comments pointing to Bundleware, Look2Me, and SimilarSingles. It is because that at the time of installing any software from that belongs to Nictech Networks, the first thing it does is access the Internet at the time of install and install one of the cab files directly from abetterinternet.com."

Welcome to NNFA - Products and Services Science and Quality Assurance: "Huperzine A is an alkaloid isolated from a Chinese herbal medicine prepared from the moss Huperzia serrata. It is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (1B). The neurotransmitter acetylcholine is destroyed by this enzyme. Since acetylcholine production in the brain is reduced in Alzheimer's disease, inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase have been found useful in treating this disorder. Huperzine A has been tested in small clinical trials in China and improved memory, cognition and behavior in a majority of patients (2A, 3A). No severe adverse effects were found."

Exhibitions: "Presenting more than 100 lynching postcards, and related material, the exhibition Without Sanctuary documents an era in American history that permitted unspeakable acts of terror against an unprotected segment of its population. In conjunction with the exhibition, and perhaps more important than the images themselves is Baring Witness, Baring Our Souls, an eight-month forum designed to encourage dialogue related to the atrocities that occurred, the ensuing activism-initiated by black women, and supported by white women-and solutions to help stem the tide of intolerance and violence that continues to exist in the nation today. The forum, therefore, provides an array of educational programs including lectures, film series, and panel discussions that invite audience participation. The Museum's Education Department has developed a curriculum that will engage, educate, and enlighten school children. This installation is organized from the collections of James Allen and John Littlefield, and presented by the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. Mandrake Linux tips for free: "This page describes the installation I did with the 4cd Mandrake Linux 10.0 Community Edition set."
Linux Man Page for RESIZE2FS (8): "SYNOPSIS
resize2fs [ -d debug-flags ] [ -f ] [ -F ] [ -p ] device [ size ]
DESCRIPTION
The resize2fs program will resize ext2 file systems. It can be used to enlarge or shrink an ext2 file system located on device so that it will have size blocks. If the size parameter is not specified, it will default to the size of the partition. The size parameter may never be larger than the size of the partition.
The resize2fs program does not manipulate the size of partitions. If you wish to enlarge a filesystem, you must first make sure you can expand the size of the underlying partition first. This can be done using fdisk (8) by deleting the partition and recreating it with a larger size. When recreating the partition, make sure you create it with the same starting disk cylinder as before! Otherwise, the resize operation will certainly not work, and you may lose your entire filesystem.
If you wish to shrink an ext2 partition, first use resize2fs to shrink the size of filesystem. Then you may use fdisk (8) to shrink the size of the partition. When shrinking the size of the partition, make sure you do not make it smaller than the new size of the ext2 filesystem!
OPTIONS
-d debug-flags
Turns on various resize2fs debugging features, if they have been compiled into the binary. debug-flags should be computed by adding the numbers of the desired features from the following list: \ 1\ -\ Print out all disk I/O \ 2\ -\ Debug block relocations \ 8\ -\ Debug inode relocations \ 16\ -\ Debug moving the inode table
-p
Prints out a percentage completion bars for each resize2fs operation, so that the user can keep track of what the program is doing.
-f
Forces resize2fs to proceed with the filesystem resize operation, overriding some safety checks which resize2f"

One Knoppix CD.
1GB of RAM: Don't worry if you don't have this much RAM; swap space will work just as well.
One PC with an existing Linux distribution installed and at least two partitions:
Partition 1, where you will develop the Knoppix CD. It must have at least 4GB of free space, although you'll need 5GB if you are short on RAM.
Partition 2, a 710MB empty partition.
The command-line utility create_compressed_fs, which can be copied from the Knoppix CD.

You must understand how to create partitions on your hard drive.
You must understand basic bash scripting.
You should be familiar with a Linux bootloader.
You must understand how to add swap memory (using the dd, mkswap, and swapon utilities), unless you have 1GB of RAM.

LinuxDevCenter.com: Using and Customizing Knoppix [Nov. 20, 2003]: "The basic idea of making a Knoppix CD is to gather what you want on the CD by simulating it on the hard drive. You should be able to edit installed software and test your creation by rebooting the machine from the hard drive, via a bootloader, instead of wasting time burning it to a CD. This development environment mimics the CD, except it's significantly faster. Remember, this is not a standard Linux installation! Even though you are booting from the hard drive, you are in fact emulating an OS that is installed on a CD. When booted, the filesystem cannot be changed; it is read-only. "

Bird Computer 6502 Page: "How to obtain TV Video Output From an FPGA
This project arose from my desire to have color video output to a TV rather than an expensive monitor. Most of the sample circuits I've seen for hobbyist type video output use VGA output to drive a monitor. Interfacing to a VGA monitor is relatively easy and provides a high quality video output. But what do you do if you don't have a VGA monitor to spare ? Many hobby type projects do not have the memory capacity or performance to drive a VGA monitor. Even used VGA monitors in good working order can be relatively expensive. How about using a TV instead ? It turns out that interfacing to a TV is almost as easy as interfacing to a VGA monitor. I came up with the following two circuits, the first of which I've built, the second of which I'm pretty sure will work. Schematics for the circuits are here: vdac.pcx"

TheDenverChannel.com - News - 'Jews Killed Jesus' Sign Causing Controversy: "A billboard unveiled on Ash Wednesday, the same day that a controversial movie depicting the last hours of Jesus Christ premiered, is sparking criticism from people of all faiths.
The large-size outdoor marquee, which sits on the property of the Lovingway United Pentecostal Church at Colorado and Mississippi, says, 'Jews Killed The Lord Jesus' and the word 'Settled!'
'It's settled,' said Maurice Gorden, Loveway pastor. 'The word of God is the final word.'
The Anti-Defamation League asked for the marquee to be changed because it is anti-Semitic, but the church only amended the billboard slightly by removing the word 'settled' and attributing the line to biblical Scriptures.
That, however, is still not appeasing critics."

Vatican regrets marriage of Archbishop Milingo: "Meanwhile the exorcist of the Diocese of Rome, Fr Gabriele Amorth - a longtime friend of Milingo - said: 'Reconstructing the last years of his life, we realize that the Moonies have hunted him mercilessly. We have even identified the people who kidnapped him; they have brainwashed him. It is an Italian family in particular, which has disappeared with him in the United States.' "

Unwise Microwave Oven Experiments: "Years ago I was living with roommates, and while working in the kitchen I noticed that the fluorescent light over the sink was about 8 inches long. A light went on in my brain ;) because I'd always wondered what would happen if a fluorescent tube was placed in a microwave oven. In theory the standing-wave RF energy should have enough voltage to ignite the mercury vapor into a plasma, and the lamp should light. But standard ovens put out at least 500 watts, so the tiny fluorescent tube should light quite brightly, to say the least. I'd never before encountered a fluorescent tube which was short enough to fit in an oven. So, I pulled out the tube, stuck it in the oven, said 'THEY'RE HEEEEEERE!' , and punched the ON switch. Sure enough, the kitchen was lit up by a blue-white blaze of light coming from the front of the microwave oven. I only let it run for about 1 second, but this was enough to heat the fluorescent tube so it was too hot to touch."

Sitting in a room imbued with the
magnificent sound of the BeoLab 5, the
overriding impression is of walls disappearing
and the ceiling opening up to
let the sound flow. The sound is big,
natural, but not loud – even at the
highest sound levels. The 2500 watt
sound delivery is totally free from
extranaeous noise. The
complete music experience is there,
from the deepest to the highest tones.
“From the outside, BeoLab 5 is nothing
less than a sensation that sets new
standards for loudspeakers. The
performance and technology make it
very hard to do comparisons with other
loudspeakers in the market,” states
President & CEO Torben Ballegaard
Sørensen, Bang & Olufsen. He continues:
“Internally, however, BeoLab 5 represents
a natural evolution for Bang &
Olufsen – or to put it differently, it’s a
result of the way we work. Many of the
technologies used are already present
in our existing loudspeakers and this
speaker, BeoLab 5, we believe is among
the very top-performers of the world
today.”
Behind this unique product lies 20 years
of intensive acoustic research, a meeting
in a hotel suite in Los Angeles and a
young Danish engineer’s dedicated
work with bass control.
Since the early 80s, Bang & Olufsen
engineers have worked with the scientific
development of acoustics under
the theme “What constitutes good
sound?” and “How do people perceive
sound as good?” As it happened, a
young Master of Science student, Jan
Abildgaard Pedersen, had begun to
study bass control while, at the same
time, across the Atlantic, an Associated
Professor and a young Recording
Engineer were working on a new
technology that delivered sound at a
horisontal angle of 180 degrees.
Jan Abildgaard Pedersen subsequently
joined B&O as a technology specialist in
order to continue his work with bass
control while the two American sound
experts, in 1996, had their first meeting
with Bang & Olufsen in Los Angeles.
They knew that Bang & Olufsen had
been researching into loudspeaker performance
for some time – and Bang &
Olufsen soon realised the potential in
combining several cutting-edge technologies
into one unique product.
BeoLab 5 does not only stand out
acoustically. With its cone shape with
three circular discs on top, it also differs
enormously from existing loudspeaker
designs. The shape underscores the new
technology, Acoustic Lens Technology
patented by Sausalito Audio Works and
licensed by Bang & Olufsen. By means
of two ellipse-based shapes Acoustic
Lens Technology delivers the sound
from treble and mid-range at a 180
degree angle in the horizontal plane.
A long-throw bass driver of 15 inches
for the deep bass and a 6.5 inch unit
for the upper bass is supported by two
1000 watt ICEpower® amplifiers
occupying two thirds of the unit from
their position at the base of the cone.
Once the loudspeaker is positioned in
its desired location, or you have made
changes to the content of the room,
you press a small button at the top
after which a small, moveable microphone,
the Moving Microphone System,
measures the room’s bass properties by
analyzing the emitted soundwaves and
adapting the bass in accordance with
the loudspeaker’s position.
The Adaptive Bass Control system,
coupled with Acoustic Lens Technology,
ensures optimum sound experience
regardless of the listener’s own
loudspeaker’s position.

Job Stress and Burnout: "According to Repetti (1987), workers in a stressful work situation were less likely to report negative mental health indicators (depression, anxiety) if they perceived themselves to have a supportive supervisor.' "
Job Stress and Burnout: "Likewise, and increase in bureaucracy and the numbers of layers of organizational administration may lead to a reduction of communication within an organization and a sense of depersonalization."
Job Stress and Burnout: "The increased specialization of many jobs results in fragmentation of work. The worker is involved wwith only one small segment of producing the total product or providing services to the client; a loss of sense of accomplishment and autonomy may result."
Job Stress and Burnout: "A number of characteristics of the work environment associated with stress have also been identified. One is an excessive workload, not only in terms of number of hours of work expected, but also in terms of the complexity of the work and frequent change in work demands, sometimes associated with rapid advances in technology. Another is ambiguity as to the worker's rights, responsibilities, status, and goals; with such role ambiguity, the worker may experience a sense of loss control and autonomy on the job. Insufficient resources to accomplish the job and administrative indifference or interference also create stress."
Burnout: Often a Result of Job/Worker Mismatch: "The third kind of burnout occurs when the worker is daily overwhelmed with complex and varied tasks, being continuously required to respond to a variety of urgent, demanding, and changing circumstances. Nurses in emergency wards sometimes experience this second kind of burnout. "
Burnout: Often a Result of Job/Worker Mismatch: "A second kind of burnout occurs when a person works at the same job for many years and following a period of modest progress or improvement settles into a very prolonged period where there appear to be no additional avenues or opportunities for progress. An example might be a job at the lower levels of management that someone has had for the past 10 or more years. There might have been a little progress in the first couple of years, but the worker now feels that opportunities to move up the management ladder are definitely not available to him/her. Additionally, the work being done has become routine, highly predictable, and unexciting. This, together with the limited opportunities for advancement, tends to create feelings of hopelessness and stagnation."
Burnout: Often a Result of Job/Worker Mismatch: "Work & Career Burnout DefinedBurnout can occur in three major ways. The first kind is where the worker performs essentially the same routine and uninspiring work day after day for years. This kind of repetitious, boring, and uninteresting work is associated with feelings of stagnation, helplessness, and depression. Workers in this situation may experience problems at work or bring the emotional problems to their homes. Individuals who work in clerical jobs doing routine and repetitious work or those on assembly lines sometimes experience this variant of burnout. "
Burnout: "3. Track your progress and value incremental progress. Experiencing progress toward your goals is highly motivating. But surprisingly, people have a difficult time recognizing progress and giving value to it. "
Burnout: "d. Sticking with your own structure gives you a sense of control and helps you to recognize your progress."
Burnout: "c. Structure helps keep you on track when you get distracted or interrupted. You have a roadmap to return to. Its easier to stay on track."
Burnout: "b. Structure frees you from constant decision making. You dont have to waste important time deciding what to do next when you have a window of free time."
Burnout: "a. Structure buffers you from the stresses of everyday work. "
Burnout: "2. Set up your own structure: People typically think of too much routine when they think of burnout. Day in, day out, the same thing. But upon closer inspection, it isnt the routine thats the problem; its the control over the routine. "
Burnout: "1. Plan: A surprising number of people dont take the time to plan their goals and plan their day. Planning immediately gives you a necessary sense of control and direction. And having a plan for the day helps you resist the temptation to overcommit. People tell me they dont plan because theyre afraid of being disappointed when they arent able to follow through. Following through on your plan takes practice, and you dont have to follow your plan perfectly to be making important progress."
Burnout: "When you cant identify meaningful accomplishments at the end of the day, you tend to feel physically and emotionally drained. Youre lacking that feeling of progress, of moving forward toward your goal. This sense of progress, or control over your goals, is vital to enjoyment of your work. "
Burnout: "Compare how you feel at the end of a productive day vs. the end of a day spent mired in distractions and unfocused activity. Both days make you feel tired. But the quality of tired is different. When 5:00 comes, and you can identify solid progress toward your most important goals, you tend to feel satisfied, even energized, although you may also feel tired. But its similar to the tired you feel at the end of a good workout. And the idea of doing it again feels good. "
Burnout: "But another common cause of burnout, and one that is commonly overlooked, is the workers approach to the work itself, which can powerfully impact how you feel about your job. "
Burnout: "When people are feeling burned out, they commonly attribute this to external conditions such as: too much work, poor leadership, inadequate support, poor working conditions, etc. and in many cases, these are the primary problems. "
Burnout: "Burnout usually appears when a worker feels a lack of control over the outcome of their efforts. In other words, when you feel you can accomplish what you want to accomplish, you usually feel happy and motivated. When you feel you cant accomplish what you want to accomplish, you tend to feel depressed. "
Burnout: "Burnout commonly manifests itself in the workplace in symptoms such as boredom, fatigue, distractibility, low motivation, and emotional withdrawal. "
Burnout: "The cure for burnout can be found in work itself. By this I mean that employees can get off the burnout treadmill by developing better work habits. Burnout can best be avoided by developing skills such as organization, planning, goal-setting, mental discipline, and conflict resolution. "
Burnout: "Burnout
Much has been written recently about 'career burnout'. Popular opinion suggests that such burnout can be cured through a prescription of vacation, sabbatical, career change, and soul search. "

At the foundation of any successful intervention is a tracking system. People need to know whether they're going in the right direction. The training package lays out procedures for follow-up to the initial assessment, and how to take corrective action when things are going off track. "

Meaningful change in organizational life is a participatory activity. The training package concerns how an organization takes on a project to assess itself and to communicate its findings throughout the members of the organization. In this model, intervention does not come from above, but from every direction in the organization. It is a total involvement process"
FirstSearch: Search the catalog at Oakland University Library: "1) Establish an information flow.
Organizations require an ongoing dialogue with their staff. Some of this information flow comes from day-to-day interaction. Focus groups or town-hall meetings add depth by putting an explicit focus on the workplace itself The training package includes a survey that gives a thorough assessment of the three aspects of burnout and how they relate to the six areas of work life."
FirstSearch: Search the catalog at Oakland University Library: "6) Values When people feel aligned with the values of their organization they are more energetic, involved, and effective at what they do. A serious mismatch between individual and organizational values leads people to question the entire employment relationship. As technology intensifies the pace of the 21st century workplace, people may lose their connection with what they do. New materials or products, the move from face-to-- face to mediated communication and the expectations of constantly increasing productivity change the nature of work. What appears to be an improvement from one perspective could be an empty compromise from another. "
FirstSearch: Search the catalog at Oakland University Library: "4) Community
Communication technologies permit people to participate in global communities through e-mail, ICQ video conferencing, and many other forms of getting together. The considerable demands of this virtual community eat into the time available for the people closer to home. Greater connectivity adds to the demands of life."
FirstSearch: Search the catalog at Oakland University Library: "5) Fairness
The experience of being treated unfairly has an intense emotional impact that undermines a relationship with work. In contrast, being treated with respect and consideration promotes engagement with work. The increasing pace of work brings greater intensity to this dynamic. "
FirstSearch: Search the catalog at Oakland University Library: "3) Reward
The monetary, social and prestigious rewards of work acknowledge extraordinary contributions of people to some degree. But the invasive nature of the 21st century work world infringes on the capacity of people to enjoy the personal rewards. Many of the meaningful rewards of life take time to fully appreciate. "
FirstSearch: Search the catalog at Oakland University Library: "2) Control
An intensifying pace of work strains the balance of control between individuals and organizations. On the one hand, the vastly greater access managers have to information about their organization's operations and finances increases their capacity to develop, implement and monitor a plan to enhance the quality of their work. On the other hand, technology increases the interdependency among people at work. The need for tighter coordination among people moves autonomy from the individual to the work group. "
FirstSearch: Search the catalog at Oakland University Library: "1) Workload
Excessive workload is not new, but today's technology and pace of life bring an increasing intensity to work. The greater availability afforded by communication technology-cell phones, voice mail, e-mail-requires an active defense of personal time as work contacts come to expect an immediate response any time, anywhere. The productivity edge gained through the effective use of information technology at work is being overtaken by the increasing expectations of customers, colleagues and executives. Doing more becomes the norm. "
FirstSearch: Search the catalog at Oakland University Library: "Burnout is a crucial issue for businesses committed to quality and organizations that are innovating constantly and need top performance from talented people. Employees need a depth of commitment and they need to sustain that level of commitment, creativity and productivity over the long term. "
FirstSearch: Search the catalog at Oakland University Library: "The Truth About Burnout (Jossey-- Bass 1997) debunks the common myth that workers are solely responsible for the fatigue, anger and 'don't give a damn' attitude they experience as part of burnout."

Center for American Progress - Progress Report - Page: "Bush did mention the report by CIA weapons inspector David Kay, claiming Kay 'identified dozens of weapons of mass destruction-related program activities.' The 'WMD-related program activities' description was a stark contrast to his previous definitive declarations that Iraq possessed fully-developed WMD, ready to be deployed at any moment "
Center for American Progress - Progress Report - Page: "Bush also said, 'Under the law you passed, seniors can choose to receive a drug discount card, saving them 10 to 25% off the retail price of most prescription drugs.' But these discount cards do not guarantee seniors a price discount. Specifically, 'sponsors of drug discount cards will be allowed to change their prices and the list of covered drugs on a weekly basis.' "
Center for American Progress - Progress Report - Page: "Bush said, 'We can cut the deficit in half over the next five years.' But the plan he was referring to 'omits a number of likely costs' such as the continued cost of Iraq and its own defense spending plans. All told, he is proposing roughly $3 trillion in new tax cuts and spending, including $1 trillion to make his tax cuts permanent, $1 trillion to privatize Social Security, $50 billion more for war in Iraq, $1.5 billion to promote marriage, and a Mars proposal that could cost $500 billion. The result is that the deficit is predicted to be 'in the range of $500 billion in 2009' not even near half of what it currently is. "
Center for American Progress - Progress Report - Page: "Bush said, 'Jobs are on the rise,' referring to the recent drop in the unemployment rate. But he didn't mention that the unemployment drop was due to the fact that the economy was so bleak that 255,000 of the jobless simply stopped looking for work. Additionally, the jobs that are being created are lower-paying. "
Center for American Progress - Progress Report - Page: "'With lines like 'America will never seek a permission slip to defend the security of our people,' Bush was clearly sounding a campaign theme.' "
Center for American Progress - Progress Report - Page: "only 76% of Americans watching the speech had a favorable impression, down from 84% last year and 94% the year before. At the same time, the percentage of Americans who felt negatively jumped up to nearly a quarter of those watching."
Center for American Progress - Progress Report - Page: "The numbers are in, and they show President Bush's speech didn't go over as well with the public as previous State of the Union addresses. According to a new WP/ABC News poll, President Bush 'deliver[ed] his State of the Union address...to an American public that has become broadly dissatisfied with his domestic agenda.' "
Center for American Progress - Progress Report - Page: "This year's 'pre-speech spinners told us that the address had two basic goals, to remind voters that Bush is a busy, serious commander-in-chief making the world safe from evil-doers and to show empathy on the domestic issues that polls show he needs help on.'
