You should be able to edit installed software and test your creation by rebooting the machine from the hard drive, via a bootloader, instead of wasting time burning it to a CD. This development environment mimics the CD, except it's significantly faster. Remember, this is not a standard Linux installation! Even though you are booting from the hard drive, you are in fact emulating an OS that is installed on a CD. When booted, the filesystem cannot be changed; it is read-only. "

This project arose from my desire to have color video output to a TV rather than an expensive monitor. Most of the sample circuits I've seen for hobbyist type video output use VGA output to drive a monitor. Interfacing to a VGA monitor is relatively easy and provides a high quality video output. But what do you do if you don't have a VGA monitor to spare ? Many hobby type projects do not have the memory capacity or performance to drive a VGA monitor. Even used VGA monitors in good working order can be relatively expensive. How about using a TV instead ? It turns out that interfacing to a TV is almost as easy as interfacing to a VGA monitor. I came up with the following two circuits, the first of which I've built, the second of which I'm pretty sure will work. Schematics for the circuits are here: vdac.pcx"

8051 microcontroller (on the back of the board). Use of the 8051 is optional. When in use, the 8051 and FPGA can communicate through an 8-bits synchronous bidirectional bus.
Prototyping area/which can accomodate two RJ-45 Ethernet connectors
Top and bottom SIL connectors - can plug into a wide 'solderless-breadboards' for experiments.
Has a dual-row connectors, so can be used as motherboard for other projects.
Two onboard clocks: a fixed 24MHz clock, plus a socketed 3.3V DIL-8 oscillator.
Top IOs are configured to accept LCD text modules; option to accept a graphical LCD panel (in development).
100% plug'n play, i.e. you can download the FPGA and the 8051 from the PC (through the USB). Doing both takes less than 1 second. "
